The Battlefield 2 FAQ
Man, you people ask a lot of questions.
by Tom McNamara
June 8, 2005 - So maybe you\'ve heard that Battlefield 1942 is getting a proper sequel (since it\'s called Battlefield 2 and not, say, Battlefield 3, making BF: Vietnam like that gay cousin you see every Thanksgiving). There\'s a lot of excitement around BF2 leading up to its imminent release, now that the word is out that it\'s actually really neat, unlike BF Vietnam, which was just kinda neat. A bunch of the gamer press has gotten their grubby hands on it, ourselves included, and the response looks like it\'s pretty much \"thumbs up\" across the board.

Naturally, there comes a flood of interest. Probably that much more so, since summer is typically the gaming lull of the year. We have a Q&A thread on the Insider message boards that\'s had well over 300 posts in the six days since we started the topic. But of course, not all of you are Insider members (for shame!), and since we\'re such awesome guys, we thought we\'d share the biggest questions and answers for your perusal. We also slotted some videos that show what the game looks like on the lowest detail settings, so check \'em out.

Here goes!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

윈도우즈 XP가 필요하다는 얘기...

Q: So the game doesn\'t really require Windows XP, right? That was just a typo.

A: No, you read that right. BF2 does indeed require Windows XP. Come on guys, it\'s been on store shelves for like four years, right? Get with the times!

요구사양에 관한 얘기...

Q: What in holy heck are the system requirements? I can\'t find them anywhere. I curse you, IGN!

A Simmer down now, tiger. The problem is that neither EA nor DICE have officially published the sysreqs, despite the fact that the release date is approximately two inches to my left. However, the press preview builds have a readme file from which we can draw the following pearls of wisdom:

Minimum Specification:
CPU: 1.7 GHz
RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: nVidia GeForce FX 5700, ATI Radeon 8500 or ATI Radeon 9500 with 128 MB of RAM

Recommended Specification:
CPU: 2.4 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Video Card with at least 256 MB of RAM

Video Cards

Battlefield 2 only supports the following video cards:
Radeon X700 (PCI-E)
Radeon X600 (PCI-E)
GeForce 6600 (PCI-E)
GeForce PCX 5900 (PCI-Ee)
GeForce 5800 Series (AGP)
ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition
ATI Radeon X800 PRO
ATI Radeon 9800 Series
ATI Radeon 9600 Series
ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350LX)
ATI Radeon 9500 / 9700 Series
ATI Radeon 8500 Series
ATI Radeon X300 Series
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra
nVidia GeForce 6800 GT
nVidia GeForce 6800
nVidia GeForce FX 5950 Series
nVidia GeForce FX 5900 Series
nVidia GeForce FX 5700 Series

The presumption is that BF2 will support nVidia\'s and ATI\'s G70 and R520 series cards, respectively.

Q: What does \"respectively\" mean?

A: It\'s one of many words you learn about from books. Like the dictionary! Moving right along…

cpu 2.0 / RAM 512 / DVD rom / ATI 9600XT or Geforce 5700 시리즈...
이 정도면 플레이 할 수 있을 정도의 사양이라는 얘기.. 하지만 램은 1기가 이상을 권하고 싶다는...

Q: Does it run okay on a middle-of-the-road machine, or am I effed?

A: I\'d say you should be okay with a 2.0GHz P4 (or Athlon equivalent), 512MB of RAM, a DVD drive, and a Radeon 9600XT or GeForce 5700 series card. But I would strongly recommend having 1GB of RAM.

Q: I have a 9600SE or GeForce 6200. Those should be good enough, right?

A: Well, the game will play, but that tier of performance is not ideal. It won\'t look like it does in the footage we\'ve posted.

Q: Does the game support non-traditional screen resolutions and ratios?

A: Yes, but you will have to manually edit a config file.

Q: Are the menus locked into 800x600?

A: No, they scale to your chosen resolution.

Q: So what rigs are you guys playing it on, then?

A: We were playing on Alienware 3.0Ghz P4 rigs with 1GB of RAM. I had a 6800GT and Dan had an X800. The next day, however, we got a set of Dell XPS Gen 4 rigs with 3.4GHz P4s, 2GB of RAM, and SATA 160GB drives. PCI Express 6800s (non-GT or Ultra). We probably would have popped for the next tier of videocard, but there was only one additional tier to choose from, and it cost $400 more. In light of the next generation of cards coming out soon, we stuck with the vanilla 6800 cards. With the extra 1GB of RAM, load times seem a lot better, and in-game performance feels a lot smoother. Upon entering a map, it appears that system still has to cache some map data and such, which is where the extra memory comes in very handy.

Q: And how did the game run?

A: Ran it at 1280x960 with 4xAA and all in-game settings maxed out with the 6800GT rig, and it felt pretty smooth (as well as looking awesome). The game actually looks pretty good on medium settings, so I don\'t think you\'ll have to blow $500 on a new card just to make the game look neat. The vanilla 6800 rig seems to perform almost as well. I should mention that we\'re also using beta drivers supplied by EA—the newest official drivers exhibit some ground texture flashing. I expect that nVidia will have a new official release in time for the game\'s retail debut.

Q: And how big is the game on the hard drive?

A: The press preview build clocks in at about 1.8GB. There\'s going to be a retail CD version, but we recommend the DVD.

데모는 6/10 나온다고 함.(퍼시픽타임으로 대략 12시 정오쯤에...) 맵은 1개 포함.  어느 맵인지는 모른다고...

Q: What about the demo? When is the demo coming out? I want to play!

A: We understand that it will be released this Friday, June 10th. The precise time is unknown, but it will probably be around 12 noon Pacific Time. As with previous Battlefield demos, it will contain one map. No, we don\'t know which map it will be.

How vehicle-dependent is the gameplay?

A: Good question! As previous players probably recall, BF Vietnam had a lot of wide open space. This meant that getting in a vehicle was a good idea--not necessarily to cover a lot of ground, but because people could see you from farther away and you were better off surrounded by armor plating.

In contrast, BF2 has varied terrain, with some extreme elevations and sheer drop-offs in certain areas. There\'s typically a lot of water, too, from ocean bays to lakes. There are maps where one side will start out on an island or aircraft carrier.

Lastly, non-floating vehicles will not immediately blow up when they sink into water. If you jump out right away and hit the sprint key, you\'ll probably survive. You won\'t be able to swim underwater, though.

Additionally, non-combat vehicle operators will get assist points when a passenger gets a kill.

Q: And how do the maps feel, overall, compared to the previous games?

A: I\'ll let our inimitable PS2 editor Ivan Sulic answer this one. He\'s played a lot of Battlefield:

\"Seems like a really good mix. This time around, DICE appears to have more heavily focused on Road to Rome\'s populated stretches of land that were interspersed with super tight choke points. Often times, levels also include large impassable barriers -- like oceans and mountain ranges -- that separate points of interest.

Right now I really, really like the levels because they include lots of areas vehicles can go nuts in, but the design is altogether tighter and more interesting than before. Some levels also come with cool central areas, like the infamous dam. The one thing I\'m not seeing, however, are super wide open spaces like El Alamein from 1942 or wacky special interest levels like Midway.\"

I\'ll also add that BF2 has plenty of urban areas, as well as hilly swamps and coastal maps.

Q: Hey, speaking of vehicles, can we steer the carriers like in Desert Combat?

A: Well, no, because we learned from DC that having a mobile spawn point spells trouble when nefarious players decide it would be awesomely hilarious to move it off of the map. Carriers are static in BF2.

Q: What about this Commander Mode I keep hearing about, where one player can see the whole map and stuff and order people around?

A: Well, one player will be voted as Commander, and he\'ll have to divide his time between playing the FPS portion of the game and the top-down Commander map. In this mode, you can order airstrikes, do a radar sweep of the whole map (the results of which only the Commander can see), fly in a drone spy plane that temporarily reveals local activity to all players on that side, drop supplies, and set markers for locations you want attacked or defended.

Q: Why would I need supplies? Aren\'t there health and ammo packs spread around the map?

A: Not this time. The Support class can drop ammo for other team members, the Medic can heal you, and supply drops will replenish both ammo and health. These two classes get points for these activities, and the Engineer gets points when he repairs stuff. The medic can also revive you with shock paddles (or kill you with them, if you\'re the enemy). He gets mad points for that. The medic and engineer will also automatically heal and repair if they\'re close enough to you, although it\'s pretty slow.

Q: Why not just drop supplies all over the place?

A: The Commander\'s special abilities (drone, sweep, artillery, supply drop) are all on timers, kind of like the special uber attacks in Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour. You can\'t just spam it. Plus, artillery will cause damage to anyone in the vicinity, not just enemy players, even if friendly fire is off. Friendly players will receive a text and audio warning and will have eight seconds to get clear of the blast radius. Any person or vehicle within the radius will quite likely be owned. On a side note, infantry cannot paint targets.

Q: Do you have to rent EA servers to retain persistent stats tracking?

A: Not that I know of. Stats are kept on their servers, but you don\'t have to pay a fee to see them.

Q: Persisent stats tracking? What was that last guy talking about?

A: The game keeps stats for pretty much everything you do in the game. The breadth and depth of the info collected in real-time is actually pretty astounding. When you first start the online portion of the game, you\'ll create an account, and the account name will be your default character\'s name. This way, your name is reserved, and you will be accountable if you turn out to be a smacktard.

As your guy collects points for various activities, he\'ll earn medals, which are just for show, but you\'ll also be able to unlock better weapons for the kit you\'ve been using the most. For example, the sniper will get a very powerful rifle that can penetrate reinforced glass--allowing him to snipe chopper pilots and Jeep drivers head-on.

Q: Speaking of choppers, how well do they and the jets fly? Have the controls gotten easier since BF Vietnam?

A: It feels pretty much the same. Unlike BFV, though, players will not have shoulder-mounted anti-air ordinance--at least not with the standard kits. Instead, there will be unmovable turrets and other mounted devices that will seek and destroy. Those have infinite ammo, but you\'ll have to deal with reload times. While we\'re on the subject, ground vehicle machine 건 have infinite ammo, but they will overheat if you unload for long enough.

Q: Getting back to infantry, does the squad system work out pretty well?

A: It\'s great because the squad leader becomes a spawn point, and he or she can choose who will be in the squad and who gets kicked. Also, it looks like the squad will have its own voice com channel, instead of hearing the chatter of everyone on your side. We haven\'t had the chance to fully check out voice com, though, so that\'s the best answer we can give at the moment.

Q: What if I don\'t want to play online, though? Is there a solid single-player portion?

A: You can choose to play the maps in this mode, with the AI controlling the other \"players\" in the game. They aren\'t quite as good as the real thing, but they\'ve improved over previous versions. In this build, at least, you\'re limited to 16 players and cannot configure the map.

Q: What about the weapons? Do they have a nice heft to them?

A: Oh yes. Each weapon has a distinct punch to it. The M249 also doesn\'t have the, ah, impressive accuracy that the M60 did in BFV. Secondly, the knife is pretty fearsome weapon now, with one hit kills and a wider radius. It\'s my favorite way to take out unsuspecting snipers.

Q: Can I bunny hop all over the place?

A: Nah, it\'s more of a Counter-Strike setup. More realistic movement, although I have had people do a jump-dive combo on me a few times. Some people think they\'re Spider-Man. Then I blow them up with a grenade.

Q: Hey, speaking of grenades, how effective are they against tanks, since the modern versions have a lot more undercarriage armor than the ones in World War II

A: You\'re not going to get very far this time. Grenades will barely make a dent. However, the new Spec Ops class carries several packages of C4 that will blow the heck out of everything, including bridges (which can be repaired by an engineer) and the artillery command building.

Q: So is the Commander effed if I blow up that building?

A: He\'ll still have the radar and spy drone (UAV) launcher, but you can also blow that up with C4. Tank shells work against these structures, but it takes longer. Other than that, only bridges can be damaged. No buildings.

Q: Does the game have that EA Trax stuff? Because it rather displeases me.

A: Nope, just anonymous game music.

Q: How do you guys feel about the controversial decisions EA has made with various aspects of its business recently?

A: We review the games, not the game makers.

Q: Thanks for all the awesome answers, Tom! j00 rock!

A: Hey, that\'s why they pay me the big bucks. Dan also told me to do it or he\'d take away my signed copy of Barbie Horse Adventure.
